ABOA upcoming training offerings and options to help get newer officials up to speed. Also a place for continuing education for returning officials.

Training Sessions

New Officials - On Court

Learning the proper mechanics of officiating basketball. On court training and walk through to different stations, where training staff will give pointers and feedback on the proper movements.

DIVISION 5 ACADEMY

Online meetings to show presentations and video to help officials get better at the craft of basketball officiating

On Court Training

Live action training and evaluation by our training staff. Games held in the Spring and Fall at various locations for new officials trying to learn and returning officials trying to advance. Feedback given after on court work to help officials grow and get better.

Monday, July 20 – Week 1: Welcome to Officiating

 

- Introduction to ABOA, expectations, professionalism, uniforms, equipment, and building a strong foundation.

 

Monday, July 27 – Week 2: Court Knowledge & Mechanics

 

- Court markings, positioning, movement, two-person mechanics, and proper court coverage.

 

Monday, August 3 – Week 3: Signals & Reporting

 

- Proper use of signals, foul reporting, communication with the scorer's table, and game administration.

 

Monday, August 10 – Week 4: Rules Fundamentals

 

- Basic rules, violations, common situations, and applying the rules consistently.

 

Monday, August 17 – Week 5: Fouls & Game Management

 

- Types of fouls, advantage/disadvantage, communicating with coaches and players, and managing the game.

 

Monday, August 24 – Week 6: Working the Game

 

- Pregame responsibilities, teamwork, transitions, clock awareness, and handling special situations.

 

Week 7 – First Steps Live Court Training (Saturday – Date & Location TBD)

 

- Live on-court training as part of the First Steps program.

 

Monday, September 7 – Week 8: Season Ready
